Brush Research manufactures the Flex-Hone® tool under the most rigid quality standards. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified company, BRM is committed to making quality Flex-Hone® tools products.
How do you size a flex hone?

Flex-Hones are made oversize so you need to choose the size based on the size of your cylinder. If your cylinder is a non-standard size select the next largest size. For example, for a cylinder that has been machined to 3-3/8”, choose a 3-1/2” hone.
What is a flex hone tool?
The Flex Hone® Tool is a resilient, flexible honing tool used to improve the internal surface finish while also being able to deburr a bore or cylinder. It is comprised of abrasive globules laminated onto the ends of flexible nylon filaments.
How long do flex hones last?
forever
How long does it last? This is a very frequently asked question and the hardest to answer as there is no true answer. For many end users, one Flex-Hone tool will last forever.

What is a rigid hone?
Rigid hones have only two or three stones. Flex-Hone® tools have hundreds of cutting points for a full 360° of cutting action.
Which cylinder hone is best?
In the case of most automotive combustion cylinders, 120 grit works for older cast ring sets or where the cylinder has been re-bored and is a little rough. Hones with 180 to 240 grits are good choices for general deglazing where the cylinder is not going to be bored or honed.
How much material does flex honing remove?
0.0001″
The Flex-Hone® tool is a surface finishing tool, not a material removal tool. We are reducing the rough peaks of a surfaces micro-structure and typically we only remove a small amount of material. Typical 30-40 strokes to achieve the cross hatch will remove just under 0.0001″ of material.
Are flex hones good?
Flexible hones are also ideal for surface finishing bores that have been honed to size with a rigid hone. Rigid hones are recommended for some applications, but flexible hones are the right choice for cylinders that don’t require initial honing, resizing, or geometry correction.
Are flex hones any good?
With their low-temperature, low-pressure abrading process, Flex-Hone® tools won’t remove significant amounts of material. Rather, flexible hones impart the ideal final finish – a plateau finish. Flexible hones are great for cross-hole deburring, too.

How much material should be left for honing?
The amount of Material Removal when Honing(abrasive flow machining) can be controlled to remove as little as . 001” and will depend on target set by customer. The rougher the starting surface finish is, the more material removal will be needed to achieve the best finish possible.”
What type of oil is honing oil?
mineral oils
Composition. The two most common classes of honing oil are petroleum based (typically mineral oils), and non-petroleum (typically water or vegetable oil) based. Common additives include chlorine, sulfur, rust inhibitors, and detergents. Honing oil has just the right consistency for sharpening stones.
