What programs does CalWORKs offer?
Core activities – These job-related activities can include things like:
- Subsidized or unsubsidized employment.
- Work experience.
- On-the-job training (OJT)
- Work-study.
- Self-employment.
- Community service.
- Grant-based OJT.
- Vocational education and training (12-month lifetime total)
Does CalWORKs pay school?
The Welfare-to-Work Program can pay for the cost of approved education or training program, books and supplies, transportation, and child care costs.
Can you work while on CalWORKs?
You can work and still get CalWORKs cash aid as long as you are low income and remain eligible. When you add your earnings to your cash aid, you will have more $$$ for your family. Work also: Develops your job skills, and helps you get a better job.
Can you get CalWORKs while going to college?
California’s community colleges provide education and vocational training that can fulfill CalWORKs work requirements, and every community college offers targeted programs for students receiving CalWORKs benefits.
What does the GAIN program offer?
The GAIN program provides employment-related services to CalWORKs participants to help them find employment, stay employed, and move on to higher paying jobs, which will lead to self-sufficiency and independence.
Does CalWORKs affect fafsa?
16. Can I get financial aid if I am receiving CalWORKs services? Yes. Practically all college loans, grants and work-study are “excluded income”.
Is CalWORKs the same as gain?
If you receive CalWORKs, your participation in GAIN is required, unless you meet the criteria to be exempt. If you are exempt, you can still volunteer to participate in GAIN. As a volunteer you will have to follow the same rules as a required customer.
How long does CalWORKs last?
48 months
Generally adults can get the monthly CalWORKs cash benefit for up to 48 months. Children continue to receive the monthly benefit after the 48-month limit. You may get CalWORKs benefits for more than 48 months if you: Have a disability and do not get SSI.
