Can I run Cubase without a dongle?
With the new Steinberg Licensing system, you’ll be able to activate a single-user license on two computers (your studio machine and laptop, for example) and you’ll no longer need a USB dongle. Just sign in, activate online and you’re away.
Does Cubase 12 need dongle?

If you have misplaced your eLicenser dongle, simply log into your Steinberg account, click on My Products. Then click the icon next to USB eLicenser as shown in this picture. This will take you to the Zero Downtime backup license page where you can select whether your eLicenser is lost or broken.

Do I need a USB eLicenser key? Most software using the eLicenser activation system will require the use of a USB eLicenser key. However, some products (such as Steinberg’s Cubase LE) do not require a USB eLicenser and are instead activated directly to your computer’s hard drive. This is known as a Soft eLicenser.
Does Cubase use iLok?
You still need the elicenser software installed, much like the iLok one, and it authorises Cubase on your system using a Hardware stamp. Remove the need for the actual dongle and leave it as it is. That’s the only way I use iLok, as a software licenser, I have no issue with that.
Do you need USB-eLicenser for Cubase Elements?
No the full version of Cubase (Pro & Artist) requires a USB dongle, just like many plugins require an iLok. Cubase Elements does not require a hardware dongle, but still uses their eLicenser. The AI and LE versions tend to only come bundled with some hardware such as an audio interface or controller.
How do I fix soft eLicenser deactivated?
In case the Soft-eLicenser has been deactivated (red font in eLicenser Control Center), please follow these steps:
- Close all programs.
- Download and install the latest eLicenser Control Center.
- Run the eLicenser Control Center (Windows: Programs, Mac: Applications).
Does a dongle wear out?
USB connections eventually wear out as the connection loosens through repeated plugging and unplugging. The lifetime of a USB-A male connector is approximately 1,500 connect/disconnect cycles. So, if you connect/disconnect your device say 4 times a day, each and every day, it should last about a year.
